The Mobile Learning Network / 移动学习网络

The Praxis Language Mobile Learning Network (MLN) is designed for the adult language learner of the 21st century.  With competing time demands from work, family and friends, adults needs a more flexible option to fit their language learning needs into their existing lifestyle. The Praxis Language MLN represents the evolution of the school and the migration of traditional learning out of the classroom, onto the network.

What is the MLN? /  MLN 是什么?

The MLN is composed of the following features:

  • Learning Media. Comprehensive, searchable, relevant, timely, learning objects. (formal learning)
    教材:易理解、可搜索、相关性和时效性高的课程,属于正式学习范畴。
  • Social Collaboration. A social/collaborative learning environment. (informal learning)
    社交协作:一个具有社交性、协作性的学习环境,属于非正式学习范畴。
  • Mobile Platform. Web configuration, mobile access, centralized data
    移动登陆:网络架构、手机移动设备登陆浏览、集中化数据信息。
  • Teacher Services.  Expert teachers lead networks both on and off-line.
    教师服务:线上、线下专业教师支持服务。
  • Administration (Enterprise-only). Security, course management, publishing tools, dashboard analytics, support.
    管理平台(仅限企业客户):数据安全、课程管理、发布工具、图表化分析,客户支持。

The purpose of the MLN is to bring the learning to the individual, rather than forcing the student to the learning. This allows the learner to learn what he wants, when he wants, how he wants. Through the MLN, the user is constantly connected to the content, community, and the tools he needs to learn the target language. The result is a ubiquitous, immersive, learning environment over which he has full control – ‘Learning on your Terms’.

移动学习网络以学习者为中心,围绕他们的需求设计、传递学习,而不是强迫学生改变自己的生活进行学习。它能让学习者选择学习的内容、时间和方式。学习者通过移动学习网络能够随时随地获得内容、社区和工具支持。因此,他们得到的是一个无处不在、沉浸式的学习环境,并且完全由自己掌控,也就是“按自己的意愿学习”。

Learning Media / 教材

Learners need a balance between the freedom to explore and find their own learning pathways, together with a degree of guidance. The Learning Media embody both – a choice of free-ranging, pedagogically sound content, with guidance on usage, learning strategies, and other things.

学生既需要自由探索,也需要专业指导。我们的教材正恰当平衡了两者。既有丰富多样的内容,同时具备高学术质量,也提供各类语言学习指导。

  1. Modular Lessons / 单元课程
    Lessons take the form of hundreds of discrete, digital learning objects. Every lesson passes the quality test and functions as a stand-alone unit. They are archived, searchable, and graded for difficulty level. However, learners are not obliged to consume them on a pre-defined basis, but freely select and combine lessons according to their needs.

  2. Regular Learning Events / 有规律的学习事件
    New lessons are published into the network  on a regular cycle to create currency, and a rhythm of on-going participation. The balance between the familiar (structures, formats, hosts, etc) and the unexpected (topics, themes, moods) keeps interest high. Through user response, the daily learning events are negotiated conversations rather than lectures.
    系统定期有新课程发布,创造时效性和学生对新课的期待。这种形式融合了规律(即课程结构、模式和主持人)与惊喜(即课程主题、内容和气氛),能够刺激、维持学生的学习兴趣。而学生对于每节课的留言则使学习从单向的听讲转变为多向、有活力的交流讨论。
  3. Engaging Content / 充满吸引力的内容
    An engaging, conversational style of lessons bonds learners with teachers. The high-frequency language takes the listener into real-life situations. Hosts offer expert insight into the language and the learning in short, manageable lessons that include, stories, anecdote, humor, mnemonic devices, and more.

  4. A Communicative Approach to Instruction / 交流式传授
    The pedagogical approach is eclectic but rooted in the needs of the Western language learner. Content is designed for meaning, authenticity and communication. It integrates the lexical approach, cognitive psychology, and connectivist insights, with a variety of skills (grammatical competence, socio-linguistic competence, strategic competence, etc).

  5. Multi-dimensional Design / 多维设计
    Learning objects embrace a diverse selection of activities to accommodate different learning styles and consumption options. They bring together text, with audio and visual elements.
  6. 教材通过不同媒介呈现(包括文字、音频、视频),以适应学生不同的学习方式和使用偏好。

Social Collaboration  / 社交协作

The MLN is designed around social object-language learning. The community features support the sharing of knowledge and good learning practices in the mode of a community of practice. As with the social networks, social membership in a learning community creates learning energy and motivation. This builds upon the learning events and on-going activities to create a virtuous circle of social/collaborative learning, motivation, and increased social capital.

Two-way Learner Interaction / 学习者双向互动

Community participation is encouraged at every point: learner-to-learner, learner-to-practitioner, learner-to-content, etc. Learning happens through connections with peers, practitioners and other community members (Knowledge does not reside exclusively with teachers).

我们在每一个层面鼓励用户参与,不管是学习者之间、学习者和实践者(老师和母语用户)、学习者与内容间等。因为学习不仅限老师和学生之间,它也可以在与朋友、其他学习者、实践者的交流接触中发生的。

The two-way flow informs the Praxis MLN in several ways:

  • Learner participation in the lessons / 学生参与课程
    On lesson release, learners/practitioners un-pack it, add to it, critique them, etc, to ‘complete’ them.

  • (Student-driven Conversations) Individual tweets/posts / 个人博客文章
    Each learner can post, to comment, ask questions, etc.

  • User suggestions / 用户建议
    Most new lessons come from user suggestions, to ensure that content is relevant to the community.

  • (Object-centered Discussion) Conversations / 对话
    Users can create discussions (around lessons, words, grammar points, or other topics) as they please.

    Users review learning materials, language schools, etc.

  • Learning culture / 学习文化
    All communities require shared values and behaviors. Relationships, trust and mutual respect form the basis of a healthy culture.

  • Teachers are practitioners and connectors / 教师是实践者和连接者
    In a network context, the old teacher/student relationships are neither relevant, nor possible. The role of teachers is to demonstrate, and model the target language, but also to connect learners, content, resources, and challenging new concepts. This approach works particularly well for the dissemination of ‘soft knowledge’ – informing learners of things they need to do, as well as things they need to know. Learning is a conversation.

  • Communities of practice / 实践社区
    The learning culture borrows much from Wenger’s communities of practice. This includes the need to build social capital, and a shared repertoire of tools, concepts and practices that constitute a common vocabulary and make participation more effective. Users need to understand the culture of learning.
    这种学习文化借鉴了温格的实践社区理念,包括增加社区资本、基于共同使用的工具、概念和实践基础上产生的认同感,它能够让社区参与更有效。用户必须理解学习文化。
  • Study Groups / 学习小组
    Study Groups allows a myriad of smaller communities to form within the MLN, focused on specific locations, needs, purposes, and study methods. Students in these groups can learn together, and group organizers moderate discussion and re-publish archived learning media into the group, thus drawing fresh attention and decentralizing the creation of learning events. For the broader community, Study Groups offer another level of choice and personalization, and for the group organizer (hobbyists, companies, schools, universities) it turns the MLN into a learning platform that allows them to offer greater benefits to their students.

Mobile Platform / 移动平台

The MLN connects the on-the-go learner to a set of dynamic content and resources for an inquiry-based (exploratory) learning format. Greater choice for the user makes for a much more personal commitment to the learning. The MLN allows individuals to configure the learning according to their needs.

移动学习网络通过一种探索型的学习模式把繁忙的学习者和一系列生动的内容以及丰富的资源连接起来。更多的个人选择空间也使用户更有学习动力。移动学习网络使学生能根据自己的需求和情况安排学习。

  • Web Configuration / 网络架构
    A website acts as a springboard location to help students get started. Each student is surveyed and assessed in order to develop a personalized course fit for their individual needs.

  • (Multi-channel), Mobile Access / 移动登陆
    The MLN is channel agnostic and strives to deliver learning materials and social interaction to the student’s preferred media. This could be through a web browser, to an iPod, on a mobile phone, in a customized workbook or CD, on TV or through a learning service/API.

  • Centralized Records / 集中化数据
    A centralized web platform acts as a lifelong record of study activity (e.g. lessons learned, vocabulary saved, tests completed), as well as a springboard into review and reinforcement activities.
    一个集中的网络平台能够保存终生的学习活动,(包括学习过的课程、保存过的词语和完成的测试等)。这些数据也能为学生制作出复习和测试活动。

Teacher Services / 教师服务

Expert teachers facilitate learning through focusing learners on relevant content, pacing learning events, answering questions and provoking engagement. Additional services are also available to individuals or groups to practice spoken fluency and have personal feedback face-to-face or through the network.

A suite of tools provide Enterprises with control over their learning networks, and feedback on the progress and performance of their participants.
