iPhone app – Quick Review
Our first range of iPhone apps, Quick Review, has been designed as an integrated dictionary and flashcard system to help make your language studies easier and even more convenient. Its introduction marks an important step in the development of the Praxis Language Mobile Learning Network (MLN).
Quick Review is a free app and can be used on the iPhone and iPod Touch. It’s available for each of the below Praxis Language products and can be downloaded directly from iTunes by following the links:

The following introduces the features of Quick Review, including guidance on how to use it:
Quick Review – Features
The Quick Review is available for each of the five Praxis Language LanguagePod websites, ChinesePod, FrenchPod, SpanishPod, ItalianPod and EnglishPod.
The main features include the dictionary, ’sample sentence jumping’ and flashcards:
- Dictionary
Each of the five Quick Review apps contain data that draws on the vast lesson archives of their respective websites. As a result, thousands of dictionary definition entries and sample sentences are accessible through Quick Review.New items of vocabulary can quickly be added to your app’s flashcard list for review. Vocabulary can also be added to your personal vocabulary list by syncing the app with your Praxis account (ChinesePod etc.).
The Quick Review dictionaries will expand regularly, as our lesson archives grow and the apps are updated accordingly.
- Sample Sentences – A Unique Phrasebook
Quick Review contains thousands of sample sentences and audio entries. These provide the context learners need to master new vocabulary successfully and, in making these accessible through Quick Review, we have created, in effect, five huge phrasebooks full of practical language.“Sentence Jumping”
Unique to Quick Review app, each sample sentence provided in the dictionary’s search results can be broken down into individual single-word entries, which in turn have sample sentences of their own.
This gives the learner an addictive method of exploring the target language and adding new, practical language to their lexicon. Try it, you’ll get sucked in!
- Flashcard Sync and Review (Premium content)
The flashcard feature helps learners to seamlessly incorporate their studies into daily life. It’s available to Premium and Teacher Service subscribers.By logging in to an active Premium account, the app has immediate access to all of the user’s saved lesson vocabulary. It also keeps the vocabulary organized using the same labels used in the personal vocabulary manager.

View a list of the word data you have accessed previously on Quick Review
These words can be explored and re-explored using the same method as in the dictionary feature. - Settings
Sync Quick Review with your personal online Language Pod account to ensure your vocabulary lists are updated with any changes/additions your make on either platform.Quick Review enables you to manage your flashcards, to choose whether English or the target language (for ChinesePod, either pinyin or characters) show as the ‘frontside’ of the flashcard.
Quick Review – How To Use
- Download the Quick Review App
Each of Quick Review Apps are available free, and can be downloaded directly from iTunes:
Please note, you will need to be signed into a valid iPhone store account to download the app. Your account will not be charged.Once the app has downloaded, it should appear in your iTunes library of apps.
- Sync your iPhone with iTunes to install the app
Once the sync is complete, you should see Quick Review’s icon on the desktop of your iPhone or iPod Touch. - Getting started
Below you’ll find guidelines on how to use the features available on Quick Review:Dictionary/Sample Sentences (free)- Search in English or in the target language
(ChinesePod users can search in English, pinyin and Chinese characters) - From the dictionary results list, select the appropriate definition
- A list of sample sentences are provided below each definition.
- By clicking on a sample sentence, individual words and phrases within the sentence are listed and can in turn be looked up.
- Premium users may save vocabulary by tapping the “+” button on the screen showing the target word/definition. This adds the entry to your app’s list of flashcards for review.
Flashcards (Premium users only)
- Touch the flashcard icon and, where appropriate, select the pre-saved vocabulary list you’d like to use
- The first flashcard will automatically appear
- To flip the flashcard, simple double-tap it and the translation will appear
- To progress to the next card, slide your finger across the screen
- Audio playback for the key vocabulary is available by using the audio button (bottom-righthand corner)
- The ’shuffle’ and ‘auto review’ options can be selected at the top of the flashcard screen.
- Flashcards can automatically flip using a customizable time delay, just as on our websites.

Quick Review – Version Information
Version 1.2.2 (current version)

Version 1.2.2 – updates:
• It’s now possible to delete individual flashcards, and changes will automatically sync with your personal account (a network connection is necessary).
Version 1.2.2 – fixes:
• The flashcard “shuffle” feature now works with a fully randomized “shuffle”.
• Quick Review will no longer crash when upgrading to the latest version from any previous version. There is no need to delete the current version beforehand.

IMPORTANT:
Version 1.2.1 of Quick Review has a slightly different database structure than version 1.0, requiring that the original install be deleted from your iPhone and from iTunes, and the new version of the app be installed anew. Simply “upgrading” to the newest version will cause the app to crash when it tries to load up. This fix has been made in the hope of making future upgrades more stable.
